As required by the Guild's Bylaws, all members are automatically subscribed to hwg-news when they become members. Any new lists will be announced in hwg-news.

General Discussion Lists

HWG-basics and HWG-techniques are general discussion lists where all areas of website creation may be discussed. HWG-basics is intended for users at the beginning to intermediate knowledge/skill level and and should be used for questions reflecting that level of knowledge or technical difficulty. HWG-techniques is intended for users at the intermediate to advanced level and should be used for questions that reflect this level of knowledge and technical difficulty.

These lists are intended for users who do not wish to subscribe to multiple lists to be able to ask questions regarding their current concerns. There is only topic totally outside the charters of these lists, and that is site critique requests (and responses), which have their own place on HWG-Critique.

HWG-Basics
This list is targeted towards those of you who are just getting started with HTML authoring. Its charter includes beginning to intermediate discussion of all areas of website design and creation, so feel free to write about anything reasonably related to HTML authoring - there's no such thing as a stupid question here!

HWG-Techniques
This list is targeted toward those of you who are of intermediate to advanced skill level. Its charter incorporates the issues of both "how to do it" and "why/when to do it" as they relate to website design and creation.

Special Topic Lists

The following special topic lists are intended for users of all skill levels. However, list subscribers are expected to know and adhere to the charters of the individual lists.

HWG-Business
This list is used by the HTML Writers Guild to discuss matters related to the business/financial/marketing aspects of running an HTML shop.

HWG-Critique
This list is to be used by HTML Writers Guild members' to ask for and give critiques on fellow members pages.

HWG-Graphics
This list is used by the HTML Writers Guild to discuss the creation and usage of graphics on the web. Its charter includes all forms of graphic creation techniques, graphic display and design issues, and hardware and software used in graphic creation.

HWG-Jobs
This list is to be used by HTML Writers Guild members to receive postings of help-wanted (permanent, temporary, contract, full-time, and part-time) notices.

HWG-Languages
This list is intended for the discussion of Java, Javascript, VBScript, PERL, ActiveX, and other web related programming and scripting languages and related issues.

HWG-Servers
This list is to be used by HTML Writers Guild to discuss matters related to administrating and operating a World Wide Web server, including CGI and server-side programming, HTTPD configuration, and other server issues.

HWG-Software (replaces Webapps)
This list is used by the HTML Writers Guild to discuss features of the tools we use in relation to the web. This is NOT a place to start program bashing, which will not be tolerated.

HWG-Style (replaces hwg-plus-stylesheets)
This list is used by members of the HTML Writers Guild for discussing and exchanging advice regarding the use of style sheets and related technologies to control presentation of web content. Cascading Style Sheets (levels 1, 2, and 3), XSL, DSSSL, and other web style sheet languages are on-topic for this list.

HWG-Theory
This list is used by the HTML Writers Guild to discuss the theories behind web development. Its charter includes the issues of why/why not and when website components are used. Questions pertaining to how things are accomplished are not appropriate.

HWG-XML
This list is used by members of the HTML Writers Guild for discussing and sharing experience with the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and XML applications, such as XHTML and XSL. Related topics, such as the use of style sheets or scripting languages with XML, are also on-topic.

Project Gutenburg Lists

HWG-Gutenberg
This list is used by members of the HTML Writers Guild for discussing and exchanging advice regarding the mark up of project gutenberg documents as XML or XHTML.

HWG-Gutenberg-DTDs
This list is used by members of the HTML Writers Guild for discussing and exchanging advice regarding the manufacture of suitable DTD's and other schemata for Gutenberg documents.

Members Only Lists

While many of our lists are open to trial members and people outside of the HWG membership, these lists require that you have joined the Guild as a full member for you to gain access. If you are not a full member, you may visit the Membership Information Page to find out how to become one.

hwg-w3c
This list is used by full members of the HTML Writers Guild for discussion related to the W3C -- the latest standards, announcement and news, and W3C happenings of interest to Guild members.

Guild Administrative Lists

The Administrative Lists are used for Guild operations, including creation of new services for Guild members and Guild announcements. If you would like to become more involved in the HTML Writers Guild, you should consider joining hwg-announce. (All Guild members are automatically subscribed to hwg-news, as described earlier.)

hwg-announce
One-way announcement list for official Guild news and information.

hwg-education
One-way announcement list for notification of upcoming HWG classes.
